Bloody Mary
The idea of a Bloody Mary never made sense to me. It just sounded like drinking cold tomato soup. I remember trying tomato juice from one of my parents glasses when I was a kid. “You mean you are just sitting here drinking room temperature tomato juice?” Was what I wanted to ask them. That is what a Bloody Mary sounded like, tomato juice but with alcohol and seasoning. Why would I want to drink that? And what’s up with those outrageous toppings? I just did not understand. BUT I had a change of heart.
I was listening to a podcast and in this particular episode they were drinking Bloody Marys. I wouldn’t have cared less but the way they described those Bloody Marys sounded so good that I actually wanted to try it. So I made it a goal to get the ingredients and give it a shot. The first time I made it, I wasn’t feeling it that much but after finally getting this drink down, I am loving it and that’s all I’ve been craving now.
Some Notes
- This recipe is not set in stone. In fact, I haven’t been using a recipe for myself, I only created one for this post. Use the recipe as a guide but taste it and adjust your drink as you want.
- This recipe is more on the spicy side. So if you don’t like spicy, start with half the hot sauce and horseradish.
- You can do more or less celery salt or vodka or any other ingredient.
- You can even go nuts with the toppings and add olives, bacon, cheese, make it a whole meal and add a grilled cheese sandwich… or you can omit the toppings all together. It is your drink, so feel free to experiment and make it how you want.
If you like Bloody Marys or if you are just tired of being home all day and want to try something new, give this recipe a shot. And if those are not enough reasons to give this a try, make this drink to boost your immune system π Now I know with this stay at home order you might not be able to get vodka (I got mine literally the last day the liquor store was open) but you don’t need to use vodka. You can sub the vodka with any other spirit you have on hand or just omit the vodka all together and make it all the way healthy.
Bloody Mary
This recipe yields about two glasses
- 1 cup tomato juice
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon freshly grated horseradish
- 1 tablespoon hot sauce
- 1/4 teaspoon celery salt or to taste
- Black pepper to taste
- 6 tablespoons vodka
- Ice cubes
- some celery salt for the glass rim (optional)
- 2 stalks celery (optional)
- 2 pickle spears (optional)
- Cooked cocktail shrimp (optional)
Method
In a pitcher, mix together tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, horseradish, hot sauce, celery salt, black pepper and vodka. Adjust ingredients to taste.
Put some celery salt in a saucer then wet the rims of two glasses with water. Put the rims of the glasses in the saucers until they are covered in celery salt. Then prepare any toppings you would like to add to the glass.
Put several ice cubes in each glass then pour equal amounts of the mixture into each glass. Place your toppings in the glasses or on the rim. Enjoy and keep healthy!
